The photo on this altar is a photo of Rev. Master Jiyu-Kennett, the founder of North Cascades Buddhist Priory and many other temples. In Soto Zen Buddhism, the master is understood to represent, and point the way toward, the Buddha Nature for the disciple. The master is also an ordinary human being. The two do not stand against one another. A true disciple bows to the master with reverence and gratitude.
